How can you tell if your accountant is qualified?
The term ‘accountant’ does not have the same legal protection in the UK as roles such as doctors and lawyers. This means anyone can call themselves an accountant, even if they do not have the qualification. Most accountants will also be members of a recognised professional body such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) or the Institute of Financial Accountants (IFA).
If you are looking to validate an accountant or double check their credentials, many membership bodies provide searchable online directories. Our guide helps you to know what credentials you need to look for.
