What changes has the Autumn Budget brought for APR and BPR?

It wasn’t all doom and gloom as during her speech, the Chancellor confirmed that the £1million limit on the 100% Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR) will be transferable between spouses and civil partners when it is introduced in April 2026.

This is no doubt welcome news for farming families and business owners facing rising asset values and increased pressure on succession planning. A 50% relief will apply if the property is let but still qualifies as agricultural land, or where that £1 million threshold is exceeded.

Could you be affected by these recent changes?

If you think you might be affected by some of the recent changes announced in the Budget, it is important to seek professional advice - especially when assessing how the new APR and BPR limits might affect you.

To protect your family wealth, it might also be worth reviewing your will, as well as considering any lifetime gifting allowances that might be appropriate to distribute the estate in advance of their passing to make the most of any tax reliefs.

Families dealing with incapacity or outdated wills may have challenges updating their affairs in time before April 2026, so anyone relying on the traditional approach of passing assets upon death may be at risk of unexpected tax liabilities.
